After a recent discussion on a statement made by Dato' Rais Yatim concerning the detriment of malay culure as a result of malays adopting more 'arab' culture, n the suggestion that malays are more arabs than arabs, (which is ridicilous by the way) there were certain issues that needed to be settled, n i hope ikhwah n akhwat could help me with the following issue:
1) Ulik mayang is a traditional dance, derived from a form of pujaan called Puja Pantai. It is well known that Puja Pantai is haram since it is a form of syirik. But the Ulik Mayang itself - just the dance minus the 'puja-puja' stuffs - is it halal? If it is done in the form of a truncated form, where parts are left out, could it then be regarded as could be done (ie bole buat, bukan syirik)?
- my comment: I believe it is still a re-enactment of a pujaan n should be left out. Dancing itself, esp if by females performing to an audience that have males, is not allowed. Even on the lighter note, since we are not sure, it should be left out. But if I was to disagree n disapprove of it indefinitely here (at NZ), i might be outcasted, distanced by the malay public which might harm my progress n my other works here (I am new at NZ..)..so, what should i do? A group of female students had asked me on the 'boleh ke buat ulik mayang' issue since they are planning to do a show here..should i say it couldn't be done? or should i give a go ahead?
2) Please give me some guideline on how for me to deal with the issues similar to above..
